If you were to look at a list of the ten films nominated for next year's Best Film Oscars, it's very likely that the films listed in this post would be absent. 2011 has been a strange one for me when it comes to films. I haven't seen many. There is a huge list of films that I want to see, Melancholia, Drive, Midnight In Paris, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hugo and um... The Muppets, that I just haven't got around to watching yet. I'm sure these are the films that you would find on many websites Top 10, but as I haven't had the chance to see them, they are not on this list.
So without further ado, here is the list of the ten best films I HAVE seen this year.
#10 - Paul
Simon Pegg & Nick Frost return as 2 guys who encounter an alien on their travels. Nowhere near as annoying as I though it would be (Seth Rogen voicing a stoner alien, guhhh).
#9 - X-Men: First Class
This was good, but still not great. It felt rushed and incomplete. Probably because it was. Much much better than 'The Last Stand' and 'Wolverine' though.
#8 - Our Idiot Brother
All you needed to say was Zooey Deschanel is playing a lesbian and I'm there. Unfortunately it didn't go into that plot as much as I would have liked, but this was still a good, nice film that I could certainly relate to, and I don't mean that I'm a lesbian.
#7 - Horrible Bosses
I love 'Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia'. I love 'Arrested Development'. Get 2 of the stars from those shows and put them together = I very much like Horrible Bosses. It kind of felt like a feature length episode of Sunny In Philly, which is no bad thing.
#6 - Attack The Block
Although initially not being interested in Attack The Block, I wasn't sure if I could put up with anymore lahndan taan films, I actually really enjoyed this film. Epic.
#5 - Super
Rainn Wilson may not have liked what I said earlier this year on Twitter, but I kind of ate my own words after seeing Super. Funny and insanely violent as well as the amazing Ellen Page being a dirty young lady ("It's sooo gushy!"), this film was way more awesome than I was expecting.
#4 - Cedar Rapids
John C. Reilly. Alcohol. Winner.
#3 - Troll Hunter
As I stated in my review, you can't watch this film without grinning from ear to ear. A truly unique and fun movie.
#2 -Thor
I loved Thor. As a fan of the comics, I was always going to go to the cinema to watch this, but I wasn't hoping for much. I was dissapointed with the 2 Iron Man films and the released images looked very naff, but seeing this in the Cinema gave me a moment of hope for next years The Avengers. If they make it more like Thor, then it should be epic.
#1 - Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
This was one of those rare moments of recent years, in that a film I was really looking forward to was actualy every bit as awesome as I was hoping it would be. Andy Serkis has signed a very lucrative deal the reprise the role of Caesar for a sequal, which can only be good news.
And here's the 5 worst!
#5 - Sucker Punch
There were obviously some perks to this film (hot girls in short skirts) but overall it didn't mean anything. It didn't matter. None of it happened. It's complete and utter nonsense.
#4 - Generic Adam Sandler Film
Can't even remember what this film was called, but it starred Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Matt Hulin made me watch it after giving it his seal of approval. Awful.
#3 - Scream 4
Promising to have a unique twist, this film had nothing of the sort. Boring and predictable. Not even Hayden Panettiere, who was obviously smokin hot, could make this film enjoyable. Delete!
#2 - Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
I really wanted to like this film. I really did. But I couldn't. It was terrible. I saw it in 3D as well, which didn't help matters. The whole film was dark so the 3D didn't even work. They should really stop making these movies. What was once a really good and promising series is now just an embarrassment.
#1 - Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence
Avoid.
